Some clients want to hear from you when their site goes down, and they don't want a login to find out. A status page contact is an email address you add to a client's page. The client gets every alert for the sites on that page and a monthly summary, and the mail comes from the page's name. This guide adds one client as a contact and shows what they receive.
What you need
- A published status page that lists the client's sites. The white-label status page guide builds one.
- A role of Member, Admin or Owner. Viewers can read the contact list and can't change it.
- The client's email address and their agreement to get these emails. You confirm the agreement when you add them.
Add the client
Open the page's Contacts card
Open Status Pages, choose the client's page and scroll to the Contacts card. It sits below the Email Subscribers card. A page with no contacts shows No contacts yet.
Add the contact
Choose Add contact. Name is optional and greets the client in the emails. Enter their Email and tick This person agreed to receive these emails. The Add contact button stays off until the address and the box are both filled in. Choose Add contact.
Check the row
The contact appears with an Alerts switch, a Summary switch and the state Active. Both switches start on. Turn one off to stop that kind of mail for this client while you keep the other.
Read the welcome email
OctoPing sends a welcome email at once. It names your workspace, says what the client will get and links to the status page. The sender name is the page's title, so the client sees Northwind Dental Status in their inbox. This is the message from our test, with the names and links replaced.
Welcome email (shortened) Subject: Acme Agency now keeps you updated on your sites Hi Ana Rivera, Acme Agency has added you to the Northwind Dental Status status page, so you hear about your sites straight away. What you'll get: - An email whenever something needs attention on your sites: downtime and recovery, certificate and domain expiry, and changes we detect. - A summary once a month of how your sites did. You can check how your sites are doing at any time: https://octoping.com/status/northwind-dental Acme Agency monitors your sites with OctoPing. Don't want these emails? What the client receives
A contact hears about the sites and heartbeats shown on that page, and only those. They get two kinds of mail.
Alerts: down and recovery, slow responses, certificate and domain expiry, domain registration changes, DNS, content, robots.txt and hosting changes, and missed heartbeats. They get the first alert of an outage and its recovery, without the repeat reminders. An expiry warning reaches them at most once every 3 days.Summary: once a month, in the first days of the month, for the month before. It covers the sites on the page, with uptime, downtime, outages, average response time, certificate and domain expiry dates and the number of changes. Heartbeats aren't in the summary.
Contact alerts follow your own notification settings. A contact hears about a kind of alert only when an enabled notification on that site has the matching Alert on box ticked. A maintenance window holds back downtime alerts (down, slow response, missed heartbeats) for the client too. Certificate and domain expiry warnings and change alerts still go out during a window. This is the down alert from our test.

Don't want these emails?
- Stop alerts: https://octoping.com/status/northwind-dental/contacts/unsubscribe?token=TOKEN&kind=alerts
- Stop everything: https://octoping.com/status/northwind-dental/contacts/unsubscribe?token=TOKEN&kind=allA down alert also lists the cause, the status code and the response time when OctoPing has them. Other alerts carry the facts that fit them, such as the days left on a certificate.
A contact gets every site on the page. You can't pick sites for each contact, so give two clients with different sites their own pages.
How the client unsubscribes
Every email ends with links to stop alerts, stop the monthly summary or stop everything. The summary link appears only while the contact still gets the summary, so the alert in our example above shows two links. Mail apps that show an Unsubscribe button use the same list, and the button stops everything. A link opens a page with an Unsubscribe button and changes nothing until the client presses it, so a mail scanner that opens the link can't unsubscribe anyone.
After a client opts out of a kind of mail, its switch in your list reads Opted out. You can't turn it back on for them, and removing and re-adding the contact doesn't undo it.
Contacts, seats and the allowance
A contact isn't a user and doesn't use a seat. They have no login and can't see anything beyond the status page and their emails. Contacts and the email subscribers on all your status pages share one allowance for the workspace.
| Plan | Subscribers and contacts |
|---|---|
| Starter | 500 |
| Agency | 5,000 |
| Scale | 25,000 |
When the allowance is full, you can't add a new contact, and the people already on the list keep getting their mail.
Verify it works
- The contact shows as Active with both switches on, and the Contacts card counts it.
- The client has the welcome email. Ask them to look in spam if it isn't in the inbox.
- Open one of the unsubscribe links in a private window, check the page names your status page, and leave without pressing the button. The contact's row shouldn't change.
